MementoEmbed works with web archives. Web archives preserve different versions of web pages over time. These different versions are called archived web pages, or mementos. MementoEmbed is a service that turns mementos into web page surrogates, small representations of web pages that can be used for search engines, blog posts, or normal web pages.

MementoEmbed has a different focus that most embed services. Compare the card generated by Embed.ly on the left above for an Archive-It URI-M. The Embed.ly card contains:
  • a link to the memento
  • the page title
  • a text snippet from the web page
  • the favicon of the original page, which in this case is from salon.com
  • the name of the web site, which in this case is Archive-It
In contast, the MementoEmbed card on the right above is archive-aware, meaning that it can identify additional information about the memento. This MementoEmbed card contains:
  • a link to the memento
  • the page title
  • a text snippet from the web page
  • the favicon of the original page, which in this case is from salon.com
  • the domain name of the original resource, which in this case is WWW.SALON.COM
  • the domain name of the archive, which in this case is ARCHIVE-IT.ORG
  • the favicon of the web archive, which in this case is from archive-it.org
  • not all archives have collections, but in this case we can derive the collection name in the archive, which in this case is Occupy Movement 2011/2012
  • the memento-datetime, the capture date, of the memento
  • links to other versions of this URI-M
  • an indication that the current version is no longer available
Consider another example page below from the Internet Archive. This page is from the ancient web site Geocities in 1996. In this case, the MementoEmbed card on the left has a text snippet, but also provides far more information to the end user than the Embed.ly card for the same page on the right.

What about other embedding services?

So far, we've examined Embed.ly, embed.rocks, Iframely, noembed, microlink and autoembed. The autoembed service appears to be gone. The noembed service only provides embeds for a small number of web sites and does not support web archives. Iframely responds with Sorry, no embeds for that URL: We could not resolve publisher's embed codes or create a card for that URL.

Below on the right is an embed produced by microlink for a memento in the Internet Archive. On the left is the same memento represented by MementoEmbed. Like Embed.ly, MementoEmbed does a better job at representing archive-specific information while also identifying information about the original resource.

Why not just use allow MementoEmbed to service live web pages?

MementoEmbed focuses on web archives and their mementos. Live web pages are already well cared for by services like Embed.ly. Embed.ly can also continue to focus on current web technologies, while MementoEmbed will focus on being able to process all of the different technologies used in web pages since the dawn of the web.

MementoEmbed is a product of the Dark and Stormy Archives project. We are examining different ways to visualize web archives using social media constructs.
